I choose to work in soapstone because it’s so fragile. I begin by wetting the stone with water and carefully surveying the surface for fault lines. It’s only by developing an intimacy with the surface that I can then determine where to cut, sand, and polish to bring the stone to life. The beauty of the finished piece is my reward for the many hours of gradual shaping.
